Sarcoma is a rare and often under-recognised form of cancer that develops in the bones or soft tissues, such as muscle, fat, nerves, and blood vessels. In the UK, sarcoma is frequently misdiagnosed or diagnosed late, largely due to its uncommon nature and the vague, easily overlooked symptoms.

Each year in the UK, around 5,300 people are diagnosed with sarcoma. However, many cases go undetected for too long.

It's estimated that up to 30% of sarcoma cases are either initially misdiagnosed or diagnosed at a late stage when treatment becomes more difficult and outcomes are poorer.

Sadly, about 2,600 people die from sarcoma in the UK each year. The survival rate is significantly better when the cancer is caught early, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness.

The early signs of sarcoma—such as a lump that is increasing in size, persistent pain, or swelling—are often mistaken for less serious conditions like sports injuries or cysts. This delay in diagnosis can allow the cancer to grow and spread.

Key Message: Recognising the symptoms of sarcoma early is vital. If you notice a lump that’s growing or unexplained pain that doesn’t go away, don’t ignore it—seek medical advice. Awareness and early action can save lives.
